How to practise a prop firm challenge
A proprietary trading (prop) firm offers a funded account to traders who pass an evaluation. Most people fail it, usually by breaking a loss rule, not because they cannot find trades. Practising the rules first is far cheaper than paying for retries.
The rules most challenges share
Every firm sets its own numbers, so always read yours. The pattern is similar:
- A profit target, often 8 to 10 percent of the starting balance (sometimes less in a second phase)
- A maximum daily loss, often 4 to 5 percent
- A maximum overall loss, often 8 to 12 percent
- A minimum number of trading days
- Sometimes a time limit, and rules about news or weekends
Why daily loss kills accounts
The daily limit usually counts floating losses (equity), not only closed trades, and resets at a fixed time that differs between firms. Two bad trades plus one open loss can end the challenge in one morning. Know exactly how your firm counts it.
Size your trades for the limits
- Risk 0.5 to 1 percent per trade, never more than you can lose three times in a row.
- Decide a daily stop: for example, after two losses or minus 2 percent, you are done for the day.
- Remember open trades count. If you hold three positions, add their risks.
- Aim for targets of at least 2R, so a 40 percent win rate can still pass.
Common mistakes
- Over-leveraging to hit the target quickly
- Revenge trading after the first loss of the day
- Trading high-impact news without a plan
- Ignoring the minimum trading days and passing the target too early
- Changing strategy halfway through the challenge
Practise on MEEYONA
In challenge mode you choose a preset (two-step phase 1 or 2, one-step, funded) or your own numbers. MEEYONA replays real candles, counts the limits on equity including open trades, resets the day at 00:00 UTC and tells you the moment you pass or fail, with a result screen. Run it on 10 different dates and write down your pass rate. If you pass 6 of 10, you are ready to think about a real one; if you pass 1 of 10, you just saved yourself a fee.
MEEYONA is not affiliated with any prop firm. Real firms count days and equity in their own way, so change the numbers to match yours.
Frequently asked questions
How many times should I practise a challenge?
Ten attempts on different dates give a rough pass rate. Fewer than that can be luck. Review the attempts you failed: it is usually one rule, such as the daily loss.
What risk per trade should I use?
Many traders use 0.5 to 1 percent. Smaller risk gives you room to survive a losing streak, which is what the loss limits punish.
Is passing a practice challenge a guarantee?
No. Real challenges add pressure and costs. Practice builds the habits that help, but results are never guaranteed.
